Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camps.Application deadline is 6/20/08!

The Organization of Black Airline Pilots Summer Ace Camp is a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE).

The purpose of Aviation Career Education (ACE) is to offer first level exposure to the aviation industry by providing aviation career exploration for middle and high school students, ages 12 -17 years. Camp participants learn about aviation history, theory of flight, and other aviation related subjects. Students will have the opportunity to go on field trips to aviation facilities, museums and participate in other hands on activities designed to give students a total aviation experience. Activities students can expect to experience at ACE camp are (all activities may not be available at every camp):

*Model aircraft building
*Introductory orientation flights
*Visits to aviation museums
*FAA and Air Traffic Control facilities
*Air Shows (if available)
*Aviation speakers
*Field trips to Military and Commercial facilities

55th Annual Kids' Fishing Rodeo

Friday, August 1st, 2008 6:30am - 10:00am at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier
Who can enter: Boys and Girls ages 16 and under(kids under 12 must be supervised by an adult). Please provide your own fishing pole and tackle. Brought to you by the Tuna Club of Southern California and Alfredo's Beach Club. Free to kids 16 and under, this annualevent kicks off at 6am. Free bait, snacks and instruction will be available as well as a chance for young people to enjoy a real charter fishing boat courtesy of pierpoint landing sport fishing. Participants need to provide their own rod and reel. There willbe prizes for many categories and everyone goes home a winner. This annual event showcases one of long beach’s treasures its pier. Sample tantalizing seafood and bbq as you listen to a wide assortment of music; inspect the newly installed memorial plaques and benches.
This year on Saturday, we will have a real Pirate ship attacking the Pier, which will be defended by local citizens and our very own pirates, cannons and sword fights galore. A limited number of Pirate ship rides will be available. There will be a kids treasure hunt, a pirate costume contest, and a beach funzone.
On Sunday this year you can enjoy a totally awesome California Pierdaze, Rock and Roll, a classic Woodies show and the inaugural “ Ocean Open Water Swim and Pacific 5k Run” our local police , fire dept and Lifeguards will be on hand for tactical demos.. Take ocean cruises on the catamaran na hoku or harbor breeze cruises.

Lakewood Block Party & Fireworks Estravaganza

Saturday, June 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The Lakewood Civic Center will echo with up-tempo music, good food, fun for the kids and a blazing fireworks show on Saturday, June 28. Festivities begin along Clark Avenue at 4:00 p.m. with the opening of 20 “Taste of Lakewood” food vendors and Family Fun Zone amusements.

The Funky Hippeez stage show headlines the evening’s entertainment. Singers, dancers, and musicians begin rocking on the main stage at 5:00 p.m. In line with this year’s Recreation and Community Services Department “Summer of Love” theme, the group offers a non-stop blend of disco music and choreographed dance. Seating is concert-style and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and arrive early for best seating.

Professional fireworks cap off festivities at approximately 9:15 p.m. Lakewood Center will sponsors the spectacular fireworks finale--choreographed by PyroSpectacular--a pyrotechnics industry leader. Best viewing is from Hardwick Street between Home Depot and Best Buy.

The 2008 Block Party will stretch from the Civic Center parking lot (at Hardwick Street) southbound along Clark Avenue to Del Amo Boulevard. The parking lot south of the Angelo M. Iacoboni Library is home to the Family Fun Zone games and attractions.

Free Family Film Festival

When school's out, kids around the country visit selected Regal theatres for the Free Family Film Festival. It's a fun-filled nine weeks of movies for kids and parents. Since 1991, Regal has provided this service to the community, and best of all it's FREE!

Selected G & PG movies start at 10AM each Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. First-come, first-served seating is limited to theatre capacity. The Free Family Film Festival is safe, lots of fun and a great way for kids to spend a weekday morning in the summer.

Escape to Razzmataz

In honor of Black Music Month, the California African American Museum will host an afternoon of free music. Performers will cover the musical spectrum from a cappella to hip-hop, from R&B to Broadway, spoken word to opera. There will also be workshops and food, and the museum exhibits will be open for free as well.
