Family Community Picnic

LBDHHS Center for Families and Youth is sponsoring a Family Community Picnic on Saturday, June 25, 2005, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Houghton Park in Long Beach. USC Summer Leader Program

USC and the Leventhal School of Accounting are looking for historically underrepresented students to participate in their summer program. The program is free and designed to attract high school students who primarily have an interest in acquiring the skill sets necessary to enter the accounting profession. The course is for one full week (usually in July) and the students will live on campus at USC. College Bound California for Grades 4-12

College Bound is a grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to serving under-represented and minority students and families in the greater Los Angeles area with college admissions. It is a group of concerned parents working together to supplement the day to day educational programs offered to children in both public and private schools. Offering a unique approach to college counseling, College Bound provides development of study and success skills, parental participation, a monthly study program and guidance in the admission and financial aid application process.

The purpose of the College Bound program is to provide college admission assistance for students from grades 4 through college with emphasis on the African-American family, through workshops, mentoring and identification of applicable resources.

Camp Geoffrey at Toys "R" Us

Camp Geoffrey* is our Summer Activity Program. It's a great place for kids to explore their creative side while learning and having fun! Camp Geoffrey is not only for fun, it nurtures the imagination and provides opportunities for socialization and encourages parent-child interaction. This free, in-store program takes place in all Toys"R"Us stores* in the United States and consists of 2 hours of activities and consists of activities that will engage both boys & girls! Camp Geoffrey takes place on Saturdays from June 11 through July 16 (except July 2), from 1-3 p.m. *For Children ages 3 to 8. Parent or Guardian supervision required at all times. Community Garden Day at Normandie Elementary

Growing Healthy at Normandie Elementary – Community Garden Day
Saturday June 4, 2005 and the first Saturday of each month
9 am to noon, Normandie Avenue Elementary

All are welcome! Please enter through the back gate: Turn East on 45th Street from Normandie Avenue. You will see the school directly in front of you. There is plenty of on-site and street parking. If your get lost on the day, call Neelam on 310 780 0426 (cell phone). Learn Indigenous farming methods you can practice at your own home. Please wear clothes and shoes suitable for gardening. Cold water and local, seasonal fruit
will be served.

Unlimited, Inc. Come and join us; do some work, eat some fruit and grow healthy, make it a family day! Lettuce, collard greens and daikon grown at Normandie Elementary on sale outside the school gates. All proceeds from sales go back to the Growing Healthy program at Normandie.

Family Arts Festival

A full day of free arts activities for the entire family will be offered this month during the annual Family Arts Festival. Presented June 5th, from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. This year's event will include more than 40 performers and interactive activities on five stages. Long Beach Library Reading Club begins June 18th

Long Beach Public Library’s annual summer reading club is gearing up once again! This year’s theme for the children’s program is “Super Readers = Super Heroes – Unleash the Power!”
The game’s original artwork features the Phenomenal 5, a new group of super heroes dedicated to protecting books and the powers of imagination. Throughout the summer children will receive small incentives for completed reading, and have opportunities to attend free programs like world record-holding jugglers and live animal shows.
The teens’ reading club this year offers Manga drawing classes at four libraries, and all libraries will offer small incentives for each book read and reviewed by teens. Each teen will also receive a free gift book for every three books read and reviewed. Selected book reviews will be posted on the Library’s web site, www.lbpl.org.
