10th Annual Grace Brethren Community Carnival, October 31, 2005, 6:00pm

Spike will be spending his Halloween at the 10th Annual Grace Brethren Community Carnival. This event is put on by HOPE for Long Beach in cooperation with the Long Beach Police Department. Spike will be entertaining the residents of Long Beach from 6-7pm.

This carnival provides the Long Beach community the opportunity to network with other local business owners as well as provide a safe, alternative Halloween event for the children. This year’s event will include attractions like a touch tank from the Aquarium of the Pacific, a peeting zoo, Long Beach Search & Rescue rappelling demonstrations, a live DJ, bounce houses, inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and they will even have “A Taste of Bixby Knolls” where local restauranteurs will be serving up a variety of specialties!

Children's Fall Harvest Festival

Sunday, October 30th, Noon - 4:30 pm

Come to the Rancho and enjoy activities and entertainment focused on the unique symbols and traditions celebrating harvest throughout the world. A passport of stories will guide you to craft experiences throughout the Rancho.
OUR FREE AFTERNOON OF ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT INCLUDES:
*The Rancho's costume parade, 2:30 p.m.
*From Field to Table - a bountiful harvest display decorated with collage artworks captures the colors and symbols of thankful celebrations from around the world, created by students of Prisk Elem. presented by our contributing sponsors.
*Bring a canned good for our harvest table. Donations will go to Centre Shalom. Since 1977 Centre Shalom has worked to relieve the plight of low income families and individuals in the greater Long Beach Area.
*Main Stage Entertainment includes a world of music and dance. Dunaj Folk Ensemble presents dances from Germany and Hungary; Tiare Productions, the rhythms of Polynesia; Get Reel, the lively steps of Irish dance.
*Hear an African harvest tale told by David Lewis. Attend a workshop prior to the performance and join David on stage as a special participant. *Bring a book you have read and exchange it for another. Visit with representatives from the Long Beach Public Library Foundation.
*Bring your used prescription eyeglasses for collection by Boy Scouts of America, Troop 126 for the Lions Club Sight Night project. Glasses can be dropped off at the Rancho from October 1 - November 2.
*Have your picture taken at the Rancho's World Market Bazaar. *Decorate your frame with a colorful cornucopia.
*Refreshments are available at a reasonable cost.

*Parking is available at the Rancho or by shuttle at California State University Long Beach, Lot 11, located on Palo Verde Avenue. Please enter at the first entrance directly south of the intersection of Atherton Street and Palo Verde Avenue. Continuous handicap-accessible shuttle service to the Rancho provided.

Kids Free Days at the San Diego Zoo

The Zoological Society of San Diego was founded October 2, 1916. In honor of our special birthday month, children ages 3 to 11 receive complimentary admission to the San Diego Zoo, when accompanied by an adult, during the month of October! Check out some of the Zoo's youngsters, including cheetah and tiger cubs, young pygmy chimps, and our 2-year-old giant panda. And be sure to visit the Zoo's Children's Zoo with its touchable animals and colorful gardens. The 100-acre (40-hectare) Zoo is home to 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. Literacy Fair, October 8-9, 2005

A Literacy Fair commemorating the 11th Year Anniversary of the Cameron Eugene Jackson Children's Library occurs Oct. 8 from 10 am to 7 pm & Oct. 9 from 11 am to 5 pm at the Howard Hughes Promenade & Borders Books (The Bridge) located at 6081 Center Drive in Westchester, CA. In addition to adult and children's festivities, a “READ-A-THON” is scheduled to help raise funds for the children of the Katrina Hurricane Disaster This year's event theme is "Reading for Good Health" and will feature the 8th Annual West Coast Educational Cultural & Black Writers Festival, author signings, workshops, panel discussions and more.
