Paid Summer Internship at Cedars Sinai

Student Summer Internship Program in Cardiac Imaging Research
Under the direction of Principal Investigator Daniel S. Berman, MD, the Cardiac Imaging Research Team at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a leader in investigating new methods of detecting, evaluating, and treating heart disease, is offering a summer internship program for a select group of motivated students who will benefit from a hands-on research opportunity.
This is a chance to learn the "ins and outs" of scientific research while directly participating in an ongoing outcomes research study. In addition, students will participate in weekly training lectures and professional development luncheons with leading clinicians and researchers. All program participants will be expected to work on an independent project and present their findings during the last week.

The program is for undergraduate and graduate students who are eighteen years of age or older. Previous research experience is not required. Students are expected to spend at least 25 hours per week at the medical center for the duration of the 10-week program, which will run from June 20 through August 25, 2006. Participants will receive a stipend. Prospective candidates must submit an application form* along with a resume/CV and a copy of academic transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable).

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2006. Decisions will be made and applicants notified by May 31, 2006.

Robinsons-May Pavilion of Wings

Back for its eighth summer, Robinsons-May Pavilion of Wings will opened on Sunday, April 16 and will run through Labor Day, Monday, September 4, 2006. Enter a world of free flying butterflies and stroll through a beautifully landscaped temporary exhibit housed at the Museum's South Lawn. See a giant swallowtail, monarch, American painted Lady or even a California dogface - California's state butterfly. Over the summer, thirty different butterfly and moth species will call the pavilion home. Discover how butterflies interact with the plants and gain a new understanding of various environmental issues. Special ticketed admission applies: $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students and $1 for children ages 5 to 12. Tickets are sold in half-hour time slots through-out the day. Natural History Museum Members receive free admission and the first available tickets.

Free Comic Book Day!

Saturday, May 6, 2006: Free Comic Book Day is a single day each year when comic book shops across North America and around the world are giving away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Comic books are an original American art form created in the early twentieth century. They are fun to read and feature a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the reader. Free Comic Book Day is a celebration of the comic book format and its myriad possibilities.

Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Cinco de Mayo is the historical celebration of Mexico's victory over French forces in Puebla, Mexico on May 5,1862. The Mexican forces were outnumbered three to won but the Mexicans were victorious over the more powerful French forces.

Los Angeles has a rich cultural connection to Mexico because it was instrumental in the early settling of California. Cinco de Mayo is an annual opportunity to celebrate our Mexican heritage and cultural beginnings.
One of the biggest celebrations is at Olvera Street Downtown but there are also other celebrations around the Greater LA area.

Olvera Street will host a fun Cinco de Mayo weekend. There will be free educational and cultural workshops, entertainment and bilingual historical information. Workshops for children will include coloring portraits of the Mexican heroes, storytelling about the important battle, learning to make piñatas and Mexican flags. Entertainment on three stages will include traditional folkloric music and dance. Participate in piñata breaking, and view a display of traditional Mexican dresses. Commemorate Cinco de Mayo and celebrate the unique heritage and cultural contributions of Mexican-Americans. The centerpiece of the two week fiesta will be the "Mexican Mansion," a magnificent dollhouse from Puebla, Mexico dating back to 1890. The Mexican Mansion, is a fascinating melding of European 19th century architectural traditions. The house comes complete with six dolls and is amazing to view the detailed craftsmanship.
Angels Attic is a two story Queen Anne Victorian house built in 1895 which houses a world class collection of antique dolls, dollhouses, miniatures, and toys in Santa Monica, California. The museum was founded in 1984 by Jackie McMahon, Eleanor LaVove, and a group of their friends to benefit children living with autism.
