50th Bday of Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, Vroman's Bookstore

Saturday, January 27, 2007 , 10:30 am
Vroman’s Bookstore celebrates the 50th birthday of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat with a party!! The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house. All that cold, cold, wet day. And with those simple words begins a household favorite of children & adults everywhere – The Cat in the Hat, arguably one of the most famous stories since its original publication in 1957. We’ve all enjoyed watching the chaos that The Cat in the Hat and Thing One & Thing Two created....and then magically cleaned up seconds before Mom came home. From a literary point of view, the book was a true feat of skill, maintaining a strict triple meter using a very limited vocabulary, while telling an entertaining story.

2007 will mark The Cat in the Hat’s 50th anniversary, and being huge fans of the story ourselves, we’d love for you to help us celebrate this significant occasion with a Vroman’s Cat in the Hat 50th Anniversary Party on Saturday, January 27 at 10:30 a.m. We’ll be serving yummy refreshments, there will be games for the kids, and the mischievous Cat in the Hat himself will be making a special appearance just for you, so get your cameras ready, and we’ll see you there!

African Children's Choir Concert, Feb 9th, 7pm

In celebration of Black History Month, the Long Beach Chapter of Jack and Jill of America invites you to attend the African Children's Choir Concert on Friday, February 9, 2007. The choir has traveled all the way from Uganda and will perform for one night only at Grace United Methodist Church of Long Beach, 2325 E. 3rd St, Long Beach, at 7:00 pm.

The African Children's Choir is an ambassador for all children in Africa who have become orphans because of the AIDS pandemic. The choir is comprised of children ages seven to eleven, many of whom have lost one or both parents to poverty or disease. Their voices sing out on behalf of Africa's 12 million AIDS orphans. They represent the future of the entire continent, demonstrating the potential to become strong leaders for a better future in their homeland.

The primary goal of the African Children's Choir is to raise awareness of the need of destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for continued development and support of the Choir's relief and development programs. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the support, care and education necessary for bettering their future and that of their brothers and sisters. Come out and join the Long Beach Chapter of Jack and Jill of America during the one night performance of the African Children's Choir.

Admission is free, space is limited and tickets are required for entry. Tickets can be obtained by visiting our website www.jjlongbeach.com or by calling (562) 597-2516. This is one concert you don't want to miss!

Thanks for your support in helping to make our event a success!!! As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

WHAT: 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Parade and Celebration
WHEN: Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: The Parade will start at the intersection of Anaheim Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., and will culminate with a Celebration at King Park located at 1950 Lemon Avenue. THEME: "HIS TRUTH IS MARCHING ON…" The City of Long Beach, Assemblywoman Laura Richardson, Mayor Bob Foster and the Central Area Association proudly announce that the 19th Annual Long Beach Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Parade and Celebration will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the City of Long Beach.

This year's theme comes directly from a speech delivered by Dr. King on March 25, 1965 in Montgomery, Alabama. In his address Dr. King encouraged his followers to march to the ballot boxes to end poverty, bigotry and racial inequality. Dr. King closed his memorable speech on March 25, 1965 by saying "His truth is marching on". In the mist of this past years trials and tribulations, we must reflect on the courage, commitment, and wisdom of this great leader.

This Saturday, January 13, 2007 come join thousands of Long Beach residents and visitors and help us send out a powerful message of PEACE and UNITY to those that are constantly attempting to divide our Long Beach community that Dr. King's sacrifices were not in vain and that his truth is marching on.
